Great food and very fun atmosphere. The service was excellent, and they were very kind and helpful with the many young children in our group. It was a perfect glimpse of the past. We loved walking around after lunch and exploring. The cute shops were an added bonus.

The fried chicken here is to die for. We drove two hours just to do curbside pick up and then had a picnic on the hill near the tavern. Social distancing is tough, it's hard not having places to go and things to do, but the drive was a nice break from being inside and we were able to do a no contact pick up. I couldn't recommend this place more.

I had, literally, the biggest meatiest fried chicken breast of my life. So good. Then a waitress randomly came around with a tray of chicken asking if we wanted more. Good family buffet. Go there with a big appetite.

We've been there no less than 50 times. Always excellent service. Best fried chicken at any place! Large bus trips do not slow down service for others.

If you're visiting Monticello or even vaguely in the area, don't pass this by! The buffet menu consists of simple Southern favorites, done perfectly. The fried chicken really is that good!! Flavorful, crispy, and juicy. For dessert, try the peach cobbler a la mode, because the homemade vanilla ice cream is divine. You can't beat Michie Tavern for food, ambiance, or value!

I wasn't impressed. It's meant to be old southern style cooking. Like your grandma would cook it, but they must not have had a grandma who could cook as good as mine. I didn't really like the feel of the place either. There were some cool shops next to it though.

We went for Thanksgiving dinner and had a great time! It was really busy but they kept the line moving steadily and had some great folks around to greet us and give a little history while we waited. The food was excellent, some of the best fried chicken I've ever had!

This like a history lesson and a meal in one place. The staff are dressed in period attire and are very friendly. The food is not what you would usually get at other restaurants but, it tasted very good. It is a serve yourself buffet and when your plate gets empty the staff will bring you more. I paid a little more than what I am used to spending for a meal but, I really enjoyed it. You also get a nice view of Charlottesville from the restaurant.

Food is fantastic. Old timey feeling. Fire roaring. Rustic log cabin. Benches made of wood. General store has a lot to offer. Pub gift shop had unusual things. I even found an old school, metal Jack Rocks set. Brought back childhood memories.

Wow, this place was really fun. All employees dresses in 1780s dress. Many cool vintage items for sale.

Been going here with my family since I was an infant. All the buildings are beautiful and historic and, in the autumn, it's just gorgeous. They sell fun souvenirs, great nostalgic treats and historical paraphernalia. Definitely something for everyone- don't miss it!

Went there for the yuletide dinner. It was a rainy night and it would have been nice if they had some kind of cover over the stairs. They ask you to wait there before being let into the restaurant. The buffet has sweet-potato casserole, yellow squash casserole, green beans, filling, red skin mashed potatoes, turkey and Virginia ham. I was hoping see some of their fried chicken. You sit on stools, which weren't bad. The lighting was mostly candles, so it had an authentic feel. During the meal we were entertained by a few singers and musicians. All in period garb. Dessert was really good. The gingerbread with the bourbon sauce was very good. Overall I will go back to try their chicken. It was a nice experience.

It's a scenic, historic place, with loads of 'atmosphere' (real fireplaces, fires going in the fall/winter) - definitely an old 'tavern' feel, but it was *way* more expensive than I thought. My friend and I ate there -- 1 buffet each, and one dessert each, and the tab was over $50. It's a fun place, the food is delectable, the wait-staff is friendly and engaging -- but your wallet will be noticeably lighter when you leave!

Real good food. Simple, southern fare. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The only downside is their very limited hours (11:30am-3:00pm). It is self-serve buffet style and since we arrived just 15 minutes before closing, we could have been offered the last scraps of the day, but we got a full offering of fresh food with no pressure to hurry through and leave. Well done, Michie Tavern!

Delicious southern comfort food!!! I came with my brother and sister-in-law when they were visiting me and we all really enjoyed the setting. It feels like you are stepping back into another time with the rooms and how the staff are dressed- really a great experience. It is an all-you-can-eat style and for someone who doesn't eat meat and who generally prefers smaller portions- I'm not sure the price was completely worth it. It would be nice if they had a set meal option for people like me. Also our particular waitress was a bit intrusive with my baby nephew who was with us -just a few months old and only recently out of the hospital, we just wanted some space or to be asked before touching him.Overall great experience, would go back and just wish there were additional meal options at other price points.

The food was AMAZING!! Melt in your mouth biscuits and cornbread, mashed potatoes and gravy, and fried chicken! They have other options, too, but I did not have any room left for those or dessert, sadly. The service was phenomenal as well. We were greeted as we walked up the stairs. The door was opened for us by the hostess and the process was explained. Ms. Ashley waited on us and was absolutely delightful!! This is a MUST VISIT on any drive through Charlottesville!!

As a fellow Michie I can officially endorse Michie Tavern (But then again I am a bit biased). Michie Tavern is a very fun experience. It's hard to beat eating good county cooking while sitting next to the fireplace in a historic tavern. The staff were very polite and the food was great. The buffet is a little on the pricey side but you are paying for the experience. It was also fun visiting the mill nextdoor.

Enjoyed a great takeout meal today from Michie Tavern. Real Southern comfort food. Great fried chicken with all the fixins. The family dinner is a great value. Thank you MT for this service during the pandemic.

Were recommended this place and didn't really know what to expect but we enjoyed the whole experience. It's a small buffet with country cooking style preparation. They had delicious fried chicken, pork barbecue, string beans, coleslaw, mashed potatoes, black eyed peas, beets, rolls and cornbread. Dessert was offered on a menu as an extra if you wanted it. There is also a gift shop and small tavern all in a historic log cabin that was moved there from another location. Very enjoyable!

Wow. Amazing atmosphere. Fantastic views from the front porch, all while while sipping from a decent beverage selection. Highly recommend and could easily spend several hours here. Staff was great and extremely informative of the area and history. Order the pretzels and a beer, you're welcome.

If you're interested in the buffet... check the hours. Went sunday late afternoon and only limited bar food menu available. Great atmosphere and service. Amazing historical place with a beautiful view.

Our family of 10 enjoyed lunch today. This was our second time in the last 3 months . The chicken is sooo moist and the stewed tomatoes are DELICIOUS! Paulette was our waitress....she is AWESOME! Might have to request her the next time we go 😉😉😉

A must do for the traveler in the area. The food is very good, the Apple cider is the best I've ever had, and the history, and period attire of the staff was worth driving to see. The Tavern is beautiful, and loved " trying" to play some of the authentic games of that time! If you've never been, and enjoy true historic things, this is a must!

Due to covid virus we ordered take out dinner for 7 from Michie Tavern. The call in order process was easy and we were told it would be ready at 2:15. We arrived at 2:15 and called and immediately a staff member brought out our order promptly. We live an hour away and did not check our order until we got home and it was perfect. Food is delicious and large proportions. We will definitely do this again. Please tip staff that brings food to the parking lot to help them through these tough times!

Bar part was great even at 3ish when the food menu was limited. Pimento cheese and pretzel bites were good. All the drinks were local to the area. The staff had costumes but were very friendly so it worked, I was little concerned about that but it was fine. The bar also had a selection of games to play that fit with the theme. Overall it was a fun place to come after seeing Thomas Jefferson's house. I can't comment on the buffet.

Questions & Answers

They are open Thanksgiving, but usually close earlier. They are not open Christmas Day or New Year's Day.

No, but they have reasonable prices and bottomless drinks.

No

Yes

They do celebrate birthdays there. If you want to bring a cake I would call but I am sure they would not mind.

i would suggest calling them to find out for sure

It can be difficult but it isn't a long walk. The parking lot is two aisles and the tavern is on one end. It is all an up hill walk and depending on which end of the parking lot you are parked, it can be challenging. Once you arrive at the tavern you have to navigate some stairs. If you're healthy and mobile it isn't difficult but if you're not it will be challenging. There is however room to drop off people and then park.

10:00 - 5:00 daily

We asked this question during our recent visit and were told there would not be any different food for Thanksgiving.... just the usual fare they always serve.

They have private events at night for rehersale dinners or corporate events. They have the Yuletide dinner the first or second weekend in December. You have to buy tickets to the event. The building is all decked out is Christms decorations and the fare is much different. A buffet is still served.
